i won’t dance

Filed under: a wedding story, absolutely fabulous, step by step — notsojenny @ 9:04 am

that’s not ever something you’ll hear me say.  i’ve probably mentioned this before but i was a full medal bronze ballroom dancer.   in a previous life… i haven’t danced in about 7 years.  i’ve had no one to dance with.  weddings are always my favorite because old men can dance, they know the moves.  i’m not talking about dirty dancing or the crap kids do today, no electric slide or macarena.  i mean foxtrot, waltz, swing!  i’m not a very good dancer unless there are steps.  it makes sense if you know how anal retentive i am.  sometimes i feel like i brag about dancing but i don’t really care, i’m very proud of my accomplishments.  it cost me a shitton of money but luckily i’d danced most of my life so it came fairly easy to me and of course there are dances my white little body can’t do (samba anyone?) but that’s fine with me.  still, nothing makes me feel more feminine than a good waltz in heels.

so anyway one bummer about our wedding is that there won’t be many old men.  M and i are both sans-papa and we don’t have any grandparents or anything.  i’m hoping my uncle can make it because i know he can dance but other than i’ve got S’s father to dance with and he only learned a little bit when he had to dance with his little girl (S obviously).   i love dancing and it’s just such a shame that they don’t teach it in schools anymore.  i think it’s a serious faux pas to eliminate something as polite and useful as formal dance.  i do however have one friend who was taught, in military school no less, so he’ll be my waltz partner that evening.

what does this mean for our first dance?  well i’ve been teaching M and we’ll begin lessons soon.  i’m not very good at teaching the male part so i can only get him so far.  the nice thing is that he wants to learn, he’s wanted to.  he’s said for years that he would go to classes with me, we’ve just never gotten our junk together enough to actually go.  but now we will.

i’m not a fan of people who don’t dance and don’t really care about it forcing in 4 private lessons the month before their wedding just to try to pull off some elaborate first dance.  i personally think they look silly because they look extremely uncomfortable and forced.  and why do they want to do that anyway, that’s not them!  plus dancing looks best when it’s natural.  that’s why we’ve been practicing alot.  i’ve already told M that i don’t want to do it if he can’t conversationally dance (meaning hold a conversation with me at the same time… no counting steps).  and the good news is he’s not the best dancer in the world yet but he catches on quick so we’re getting there.

even with lessons we’re not doing anything crazy elaborate.  in the end it’s just 2 minutes of the foxtrot.  yes, i said 2 minutes, that’s as long as our song is.  i’ll be posting more about what our song is when we get closer to the wedding.

for now i’m just excited to put my dancing shoes on and (i can admit it) dance with the instructors.  it’s been so long since someone has really led me that i can’t wait!  and i am SUPER excited for when M and i can dance together the way i like to dance!  next up is the swing!!

  1. ooooh fun! I LOVE watching people who can really dance, like that part in the movies where the floor just clears and everyone watches in awe. My parents have friends like that; they actually took lessons for their wedding, 30-some years ago, and loved it. They kept at it, and now go all over the country to dance competitions and have all these elaborate costumes. It’s fabulous. You never know, that could be you guys some day : )
