olympic size chaos

Filed under: perfect strangers — notsojenny @ 9:00 am

what’s the deal with the olympics this year?  there’s so much drama.  not just over “who will win?!” but with all the suspicion.  personally, i love it.  it’s like they added dramatic elements to what is ultimately just head to head competition just to bring in a different audience.  which is fine with me because while i’ve always been a casual olympic watcher it’s nothing i can empathize with.  the only thing i’d be able to qualify for is bargain hunting.  the day they add that you all better watch out – i’m bringin home the gold!
the only downfall i do see is that it makes me even more afraid of China.  i never trusted that place before and i’m way more skeptical now.  what can i say?  i’ve got nothing against chinese people, but the government there??  totally different story.  it’s one of those places NOT on my list to visit because i don’t wanna end up captured and caned (i know, i know. you don’t have to tell me what country does that).

so for those of you not in the know, here are china’s conspiracies –
little girl singing– they had one girl singing off stage because she wasn’t cute enough to be all dolled up and paraded around during the redonculous opening ceremony.  i’m sorry china but this was just a dumb move.  you really didn’t think people would find out and give you flack?  but then i guess we have to give them points for the fact that they now allow little girls to live in the country so it all evens out.
cgi fireworks– there have been reports that the fireworks we saw on tv had an added element to make them appear better.  who freakin cares?  really.  if you were there they were gorgeous and that doesn’t translate to tv so they tried to make it look like it would have in person.  sounds fine to me.
underage gymnasts – you have to be 16 to compete, china swears they are but there are records that say otherwise.  this one pisses me off.  you can take one look at some of those girls and you know they’re not “almost 17”.  they just couldn’t wait until the next olympics huh?  i think that’s crap.  it’s not fair to the other olympians who place below them and should rightfully have the higher medal because they’re actually following the rules.  i’m with Bela on this one.
skewed gymnastic scoring– this one came up more than once.  it was an issue in men’s and then turned up in women’s too (or in china’s case, little girl’s).  there were a few routines where the scoring seemed to favor the chinese gymnasts.  they made two mistakes on an identical routine where someone else made one but somehow they got a higher score.  then when Nastia tied for first she got silver.  explain how there are 2 people getting the same medal in other sports because they tied but when it’s China in gymnastics they get 1st?  i call bullshit on this one.

and the US isn’t completely controversy free either – i mean phelps’ win… i guess we all have just have to trust the wall.
but for me the biggest concern is our female gymnasts.  what’s up with the scrunchies ladies?!?  seriously!  we’re in 2008 and you’re ALL wearing the atrocious things.  except for you Shawn Johnson, you went for the bow.  you’re stylin’.

all this and the olympics aren’t even over yet.  i wonder if china has some master plan to trap everyone there and then release them for ransoms?  kinda like chinese taipei.  haha… those crazy chinese rulers.  it’s taiwan.  you don’t fool me.

  2. My whole problem with the Olympics is that they need to start them at like 6 PM so I can get some damn sleep!

  3. A) Thank God you called them on the scrunchies! It’s just re-freaking-diculous!!!
    B) I was so pissed about the gymnastics scoring too. We’re on to you, judges, we’re on to you…
    C) I’m with La about the start time. 10pm? 11pm? I like to be asleep by 11. I only saw gymnastics b/c I happened to have a bad dream and be up at 3am…
    D) That made me sound lame, didn’t it?
